In this context, the total vehicle production in the first quarter increased by 1 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 345 thousand 691 units, while automobile production decreased by 10 percent to 211 thousand 877. Together with the tractor production, the total production was 360 thousand 766 units. In the January-March period, the total capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was 70 percent. On the basis of vehicle group; Capacity utilization was 70 percent in light vehicles (automobile + light commercial vehicle), 56 percent in heavy commercial vehicles and 80 percent in tractors. Looking at the data on a monthly basis, the production of the automotive industry in March increased by 19.4 percent compared to the same month of the previous year and reached 123 thousand 457 units, while automobile production increased by 4 percent to 74 thousand 995 units in the same period.


The increase in commercial vehicle production attracted attention

It was observed that the commercial vehicle group had a significant positive contribution in the first three months, when total production increased compared to the previous year. In the January-March period of 2021, commercial vehicle production increased by 26 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. This increase was recorded as 46 percent in the heavy commercial vehicle group and 25 percent in the light commercial vehicle group. As the dynamism in commercial activities increased the need for logistics, the truck segment, which increased its production by 105 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, attracted attention, especially among the vehicles for freight transportation. During this period, the total commercial vehicle market increased by 73 percent, the light commercial vehicle market by 70 percent and the heavy commercial vehicle market by 88 percent.

The total market increased to 206 thousand 597 units

Turkey’s automotive market, last year in the first quarter of 2021 recorded 61 percent increase over the same period and the market amounted to 206 thousand 597 pieces. During this period, the automobile market increased 57 percent and reached 156 thousand 464 units. Considering the averages of the last 10 years, the total market increased by 35 percent, the light commercial vehicle market by 14 percent, the heavy commercial vehicle market by 3 percent, and the automobile market by 44 percent in the January-March period. Considering the shares of imported vehicles in the domestic market; In the January-March period of 2021, the share of imported vehicles in the automobile market was 62 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, while the share of imported vehicles in the light commercial vehicle market was 45 percent. The total market in March alone was 99.964, with an increase of 94 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

Commercial vehicle moving

In the first quarter of 2021, total exports of vehicles decreased by 6 percent in terms of units compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 261,109 units. During this period, automobile exports decreased by 19 percent to 155,457 units, while commercial vehicle exports increased by 25 percent. Tractor exports were 3 thousand 626 units, roughly parallel to the same period of 2020. 7.8 billion dollars export

In the January-March period of 2021, compared to the same period of the previous year, total automotive exports increased by 10 percent in dollar terms and 0.4 percent in euro terms compared to the same period of the previous year. During this period, total automotive exports amounted to 7.8 billion dollars, while automobile exports decreased by 8 percent to 2.7 billion dollars. Automobile exports in euro terms decreased by 16 percent and amounted to 2.2 billion euros.
